The Research stations Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon ART and Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW conducted variety trials with tall fescue and timothy, at six and respectively seven locations, from 2006 to 2008. Dry matter yield, juvenile development, vigour, competitive ability, resistance to disease and winter conditions, persistence and digestible organic matter were systematically assessed. Furthermore leaf structure was noted in tall fescue and adaptation to higher altitudes in timothy varieties. An index-value was calculated to allow the comparison and evaluation of the varieties tested. Five new varieties of tall fescue obtained the necessary index values for their recommendation. Since the variety FA 9905 was withdrawn, only Callina, Otaria, Dauphine and Elodie will be now added to the «List of Recommended Varieties of Forage Plants». The formerly recommended varieties Elfina and Kora did not fulfill the current required index for recommendation and will be crossed off the list. However, they still can be sold as recommended varieties until the end of 2011. Concerning timothy, none of the new varieties reached the index-value required for recommendation. All the previously recommended varieties obtained the needed index-values for maintaining their recommendation. Since sales of the formerly recommended variety Richmond have been stopped, it is eliminated from the list.
