The general economic conditions underlying dairy farming call for sustainable production with a high milk yield, a low cow replacement rate and optimised feeding. Management and housing environment play important parts here. Cow comfort, a buzz-word frequently employed in recent years, describes a sub-area which as a rule, however, stresses structural aspects and functional measurements. But this is not always the way to obtain satisfactory results. The aim is to further optimise the production engineering advisory service to dairy farming with the aid of an expert system. Using standardised analysis through a database, this project will identify weaknesses in husbandry and management and work out important approaches to optimisation by objectively and systematically recording criteria and indicators relating to the behaviour, habitus and metabolism of dairy cattle.
