The notion of altitudinal vegetation zones is studied with the help of species showing distinctive characteristics according to altitude in order to provide a better understanding of the response of plants to climatic differences between, for example, north- and south-facing slopes or between the Jura and the Alps. This study offers explanations for variations in wood productivity, taking into consideration global warming, which is beginning to have an impact on the forest. Tested by repeated analyses, the proposed altitudinal structure often confirms existing knowledge based on observation, but also calls in question some previously established conceptions which where insufficiently validated by systematic inventories. This approach aims to provide forest managers with statistically substantiated ground references and equally to satisfy the expectations of specialists working in applied research.
