Effect of density on maize yield and commercial quality in semi-arid area

Field experiment was conducted in semi-arid area to evaluate the effects of density on yield and commercial quality of four maize hybrids, the results showed that the optimal planting density for high density tolerance maize varieties of Zhengdan958, Xianyu335 was from 65 000 to 75 000 plants/ha, and for large-size spike maize varieties of Jidan257, Jidan137 was from 60 000 to 65 000 plants/ha. There was a negative relationship between 100-kernel weight and density, and a quadratic parabola relationship between bulk density and density. In the optimum density of 50 000 plants/ha for Zhengdan958 and Jidan137, 57 500 plants/ha for Xianyu335 and Jidan257, the bulk density was the highest among different planting densities. The weight of 100-kernel weight and test weight showed a negative correlation to density. The content chlorophyll content of ear leaves decreased with the density increased significantly.
