Pigmentation genes such as MC1R (melanocortin receptor 1), ASIP (agoutisignaling protein) and TYRP1 (tyrosinase-related protein 1) play a major role in determining coat color in mammals. With the aim of gaining new insights into the genetic factors that regulate coat color in goats, we have sequenced most of the coding region of the MC1R, ASIP and TYRP1 genes in a panel of goat breeds exhibiting different coat colors. Sequence analysis revealed seven polymorphisms in the MC1R gene of which five are nonsynonymous (Ala81Val Lys226Glu, Val249Phe, Gly255Asp and Cyst267Try)) and one is a nonsense substitution. In the ASIP gene, we found two non-synonymous mutations (Cys126Gly and Val128Gly). Two silent SNP have been found in the coding region of the TYRP1 gene. Furthermore, sixteen SNP were detected at intron 2 of TYRP1. Currently, we are genotyping these polymorphisms in a panel of goats from different breeds and coat colors.
