A trial was conducted to determine the content of saccharose (SAC), stachyose (STA), and raffinose (RAF) of 36 samples of soybean meal (SBM) obtained from 3 different countries; USA, Argentine (ARG), and Brazil (BRA). The sugars were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography using 50 ml of water/g of sample and a temperature of 50 deg C for 1 h. The SAC content varied among countries (P < 0.001) being higher for USA than for BRA, with ARG content being intermediate. Also, USA SBM had more stachyose and less raffinose tan BRA SBM, with ARG being intermediate (P < 0.001). It is known that the SAC contained in SBM are well digested by poultry and thus, the AMEn content of a batch of SBM will depend on its SAC content. It is concluded that feed mills should analyze incoming batches SBM for sugars because of its high variable content that might influence metabolizable energy content (saccharose level) and the incidence of flatulence, digestive discomfort, and wet litter (stachyose and raffinose level).
