To asses the sustainability of agricultural systems various methodologies has been developed. Usually, the three functions, environmental, economic and social developed for agro-ecosystems are considered. The objective of this paper was to present a first approach for assessing the economic sustainability of sheep farming systems using the Natural Reserve of "Sierra de Guara" (PNSCG). Based on a typology of the sheep farming systems using the PNSCG, a direct survey on eleven sheep farms representing the four types of sheep farming systems established was carried. For each farm several indicators of economic sustainability were elaborated. Afterwards, the average values of these indicators for each type of sheep system were calculated. Group 1 (sheep farming systems, small size and with most of its area within the PNSCG) and group 4 (smaller physical size, importance of agricultural crops and located in the Peripheral Zone of Protection) had a greater degree of economic sustainability. On the contrary, Group 3 (intermediate size, located within the PNSCG and in the Peripheral Zone of Protection) presented the lower degree of economic sustainability.
