The effect of different pre-sowing seed treatments on the germination of Boswellia papyrifera, A key dryland tree.

Laboratory experiment was performed to assess the germination responses of the seeds of B. papyrifera under different pre-sowing treatments. The treatments used were concentrated sulfuric acid (seeds immersed in sulfuric acid for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 60 minutes), boiling water (seeds immersed in boiling water for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 60 minutes), pricking, nicking, pre-soaking in cold water (5, 10, 15, 20 days soaking), and treatments with Gibberellic Acid-3 (10-3, 10-4, 10-5, 10-6, 10-7, 10-8, and 10-9, M solutions). Treatment with distilled water was used as a control. Percentage germination and germination value for each treatment were calculated and compared. GA3 )except at 10-3 M), nicking and distilled water treatments resulted in a significantly high percent germination and germination value, i.e. (88-89%, 53-64), (89%, 57), and (91%, 67), respectively. A complete inhibition of germination was observed on seeds treated with sulfuric acid, hot water and pre-soaking (except for the 5 and 10 days soaking). Generally, low or no dormancy problem has been observed on the seeds. The results suggest that for experimental purposes or domestication and development of the species, germination of the seeds should not be an obstacle.
