Cation exchange capacities, exchangeable bases and clay mineralogy of two soils in Ethiopia.

Soil samples from 20 locations in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, representing the dark clay soils and 36 sample in Kaffa, Ethiopia, representing reddish-brown soils were collected and analyzed. The dark clay soils had common pH values ranging from 6.3 to 7.4, clay contents ranging from 49% to 76% and an averae CEC of 55 me/100g. Calcium and Mg dominated the exchangeable cations fro these soils. The reddish-brown soils had pH values ranging from 4.7 to 6.3, clay content ranging from 37% to 50% and an average CEC of 24.3 me/100g with calcium and Mg as the dominant exchangeable cations. The total bases, however, made up only about 53% of the total exchangeable cations for these soils. The dark clay soils are dominated by 2:1 clays of a mixed mineralogy with some amorphous material. The reddsh-borwn soils contain parincipally crystalline clay minerals of the koalinite-halloysite group. The remainder of these clays are amorphous (noncrystalline) as defined by x-rays.
