A field experiment was conducted during the rainy season of 2001/2002 o Alfisols at Hyderabad, India, To determine the appropriate intercropping systems under Faidherbia albida trees planted at different trees spacing's. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three tree spacing's as main plots viz., 3 x 3 m, 4.2 x 3 m and 5.4 x 3 m and five maize-based intercropping systems as subplots viz., maize alone, maize + cowpea, maize + field bean, maize + soybean and maize + groundnut in three replications. Among the different tree spacing's, growth parameters of maize were increased under t he widest tree spacing of 5.4 x 3 m at all stages of crop growth. Maize grown alone under Faidherbia albida trees showed superior growth performance, whereas maize + groundnut combination exhibited the lowest growth performance when compared to the other combinations. Likewise, yield and yield attributes of maize were found to be better under wider tree spacing's. Among the different intercropping systems studied, maize grown alone under Faidherbia albida gave the highest grain and Stover yields and harvest index of maize. Maize equivalent yield obtained under the tree spacing of 5.4 x 3 m was superior to that of the 4.2 x 3 m and 3 x 3 m tree spacing's. From the different intercropping systems, maize equivalent yields obtained in maize + soybean and maize + field bean combinations were comparable, and found o be superior to sole maize and other intercropping combinations. However, maize equivalent yield obtained from maize + groundnut system was the lowest
