Some researchers on the white Guinea yam (Dioscorea rotundata, Poir) doubt the viability of yam pollen. This is because yam pollen grains do not germinate in some of the common nutrient media in which pollen grains of other plant species germinate. A report is here given on a nutrient medium, consisting of CaCl., KNO., NaH2PO., sucrose, MgSO_.7H20, boric acid and yeast extract, at pH 5_2 in which yam pollen grains germinated freely. The pollen tubes attained maximum length 5 h from the start of incubation at 26°C. The result of a survey carried out with this medium on pollen from male and monoecious yam plants derived from true seeds as well as those from a plant that had no history of seed origin is presented. Pollen origin and pollen growth characteristics are discussed in relation to their possible effect on fruit set and seed production in female yam plants.
