Effect of plant spacing within ridge on grain yield and its components in varieties of tall, late maturing sorghum

Four tall, late maturing sorghum varieties were studied under nine plant spacings ranging in population from 17 925 to 107 550 plants/ha in two locations and in 2 years. All varieties responded in the same way to spacing. With narrowing of spacings there was an increase in yield in both locations. However, optimum yield was obtained at Nyankpala at a spacing of 2 plants/ stand with 61·0 cm between stands on ridges 91·4 em apart, but at Damongo, optimum yield was obtained with the same distance between ridges, at a spacing of 2 plants/stand with 30·5 em between stands. With close spacing, panicles/plants, seeds/panicle and weight/panicle were reduced. However, seed weight, whorls/panicle and plant height were not substantially affected. No specific trend was observed to exist between length of panicle, number of seed branches and plant populations.
