The exclusion of pollinating agents, by caging winged beans (Psophocarpus spp. Neck), resulted in significant yield reductions, and delayed fruit maturity. Number of pods, pod weight, seed weight and earliness of maturity were reduced in caged plants of the species P. palustris. A much higher proportion of fruits from caged plants was malformed and misshapen than fruits from uncaged plants. The results indicate that insect pollination is beneficial for fruit setting in winged beans.
