Effect of stage of maturity on seed moisture content, dry weight, germination and seedling vigour in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.)

Cowpea seed growth terminated at about 21 days after anthesis and thereafter the seeds entered the ripening phase with a rapid decline in seed size and fresh weight due to accelerated moisture loss. Seeds become viable at 15 days after flower opening, well before they dry out and are regarded as mature. Percentage seed germination increased as seed moisture content decreased until maturity. A highly significant positive correlation was observed between seed dry weight and several seedling characteristics. Maximum seedling vigour corresponded with maximum dry matter accumulation in the seeds at between 18 and 21 days after flower opening. At this time, cowpea seed has achieved full functional and physiological maturity.
