Since the initial stages of development of the Volta Lake in 1964/ 65 there has been a general reduction in the heterotrophic bacteria coupled with a shift in highest numbers from the surface layers to the bottom. Slight seasonal changes in temperature do not appear to have affected bacterial counts while effects of rainfall cannot yet be fully assessed. The broad composition of the population resembles that found in temperate lakes but there is indication of seasonal increases of spore formers especially in the surface and bottom layers. Presumptive coliforms have usually been low and do not appear to be increasing. The bank: surfaces support a higher population of bacteria, particularly presumptive coliforms, than the mid-lake. A quarter of the bacteria was found to be chromogenic
