Production of soil and land suitability maps for agriculture, environmental planning and decision support system in Ghana
1996
A major factor accounting for declining crop yields on smallholder farms in the Interior Savanna Zone of Ghana is the inability of fanners to purchase the needed mineral fertilizers to replenish soil fertility. Thus the supplementation of inorganic fertilizers with low cost organic fertilizers will ensure optimum yield at a reduced cost to the farmer. The project will conduct an initial survey to assess availability of potential organic inputs in the region. Since the outcome of the combination between organic and mineral fertilizer depends on the resource quality and nutrient supply of the organic material, an initial experiment will be conducted to evaluate the resource quality and nutrient supply capacity of the organic inputs. Based on these results greenhouse and field trials will be conducted to compare maize yields and soil nutrient availability resulting from applications of organic inputs in combination with mineral fertilizers.
