Leaf and root fungal disease agents of sugar beet are among the most frequent causal agents affecting quantity and quality of the crop. Among these agents, the most prevailent ones causing yield losses in sugar beet farms include cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora beticola) and powdery mildew (Erysiphe betae) disease agents as the leaf fungal disease agents, and Rhizoctonia, Pythium and Phytophthora fungi as the root fungal disease agents which cause damping-off at the early stage and root rots at the later stages of the sugar beet growth. In the current report, information and achievements obtained from the national and international research have been collected and classified. This classification is based on research conducted on agronomy and breeding aspects of sugar beet. Having emphasized on research carried out in Iran in general and at sugar beet seed institute (SBSI) in particular, it has been concluded that the importance and damage of the sugar beet fungal diseases are less than those of the root diseases in Iran. In the future programs of SBSI, the priority has to be given to the studies and evaluations of germplasms, lines, genotypes and development of cultivars resistant to different causal agents of the root rots.
