A Study on Nutritive Value of Several Sorghum Grain Varieties and Evaluation of Its Substitution for Corn in Broilers' Nutrition.

Sorghum grain is an important cereal which is cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical areas.The extension of its cultivation and application in animal and poultry diet may reduce the imported corn and other cereals. In initial phase of this study nutritive value of 36 sorghum grain (SG)varieties and two types of corn (Iranian and Imported corn) were determined. Results showed that the apparent and true metabolizable energy (AME and TME) of SG were decreased due to increasing the tannin contents. The highest amount of AMEn (3543 Kcal/Kg) determined for low tannin sorghum(LTS). While, There were no signification differences (P0.05 between medium tannin sorghum(MTS) and the two corn grains (3458 vs. 3406 Kcal/Kg). In the second phase of the study, the three sorghum varieties with different content of tannin(LTS0.05) in feed conversion ratio (FCR), also there is no significant differences in weight gain for all groups, except for the diet which MTS was substituted completely with corn (P0.05). Linear and quadratic effects of tannin intake on body weight (BW), weight gain, feed intake and mortality were significant (P0.01).
