This research was carried out to investigate the inter changeability of the available soil data in Iran and the data produced by geopedologic approach, a newly introduced soil mapping method. The aim was improve the quality of existing soil data through increasing the purity of soil map units. An area was selected in Zanjan province in which the soils were studied and a semidetailed soil map was produced at 1:25,000 scales. New soil surveys were performed in the area using a geopedologic approach resulting in production at a semi-detailed soil map at 1:25,000 scales. This allow comparison of data in total 17 map units with 25 map delineation were distinguished on the old map, while the newly produced map contained 22 map units encompassing 51 map delineations, indicating 30 % increase in map-unit number and 104 % increase in the number of map delineations. The overall results are indicative of the complexity of translating old soil data in to new data formate. The time and the mony required to accompolish the job do not justify the desk Studies and field operation needed.
