Getting of correct, accurate and up-to-date data for programming and natural resources management is very important. Integrated GIS and RS technologies are suitable tools for this purpose. In this study possibility of vegetation cover estimation by using satellite data in Misho Dagh area was investigated. The study area is located in Northwest of East Azarbaijan province. Because of more bands in landsat ETM+ images, which therefore have more flexibility for selecting or developing vegetation indices compared with other satellite systems, ETM+ data was used in the present study. Image processing was done by using ILWIS software. Ground samples of vegetation cover and biomass were taken from the study area stratified by altitude, aspect and vegetation type. GPS equipment was used for coordinate measurement of ground samples to find their corresponding pixels in satellite image. 42 vegetation indices were studied in this study. The SYSTAT software was used for statistical analysis of the relations between vegetation cover and biomass with vegetation indices. The result of data analysis indicated that 15 indices have significant correlation with vegetation cover. VI23 was suitable index for estimation of vegetation cover in the study area. 6 indices have significant correlation with biomass. The highest correlation with biomass among studied indices belongs to VI41.
