The Line Selection from Five Iranian Eggplant Landrace Genotypes.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), 2n=2x=24, is an important vegetable of Solanaceae family. The first diversity center of this plant is India, and the second center is China. Iran is located in the diversity zone of eggplant. Iranian eggplant landraces haven't been under breeding program yet and consequently these germplasms have been under genetic erosion. Eggplant landraces similar to other self pollinated plants composed of inbred lines and we can select better lines with respect to quantitative and qualitative traits. In this project, 5 Iranian landraces (varamin, Neishabur black, Mazandaran, Ghasri of Dezful, and Sarkhon of Bandarabas) have been state under a breeding work for 3 years. In the first year, 500 plants of each landrace were planted and in the end, 47 plants were selected of all landraces for respective traits. Seeds of selected plants were extracted and stored in a freezer for next year. In the second year of project, selected genotypes (as original treatments) and their landraces (as controls) were planted on an Augment design and at the end of this year, 14 better lines were selected with respect to some traits particularly the yield of each treatment. In third year, selected lines (14 selected lines of the second year) with 2 control treatments (Varamin landrace as territorial cultivar and Long Purple hybrid as foreign cultivar) were planted as a randomized complete block design in 3 replications. Finally, 10 better lines were selected with respect to yields of treatments.
