The function and the possibility of 'Kyoshoku' (eating together)

Policy makers and some kinds of NPOs have been interested in Food Education ('Shokuiku') from various points of view, in particular keeping good traditional dietary habits. However, most their food education programs are not comprehensive, but inclined to nutrition guidance. We are sorry they underestimate the social and cultural side of Food Education. Therefore we noticed that a function of eating together ('Kyoshoku'). Kyoshoku is one of the most important dietary habits in Japan. It includes the relationship of family or community members, and sometimes is main content of the traditional event. They feel sympathy with other members and identify themselves as the member of the group. We mentioned the possibility of food education programs to improve eating habits by putting Kyoshoku in the programs. According to the result of this research, we realized that the eating habits of younger generation have been changed drastically. Many young people tend to eat alone. On the other hand, most of them need to have a chance to eat together. From the analysis of the interview survey to younger generation, we pointed out five functions of eating together. And we believe that eating together gives us the satisfactions after communication with other people and improvement of eating habit.
