Effect of sand mulch on drip lines on water content of soil

Surface drip irrigation has been used for agricultural production for more than three decades. Surface drip irrigation can maintain sufficient water content in soil for seed germination and emergence, seedling development and plant growth. Insufficient water content in the root zone may cause crop failure. The effect on water content of the Tottori sand dune soil by sand mulch on drip lines was studied. Two sand mulches, one of 0 cm thickness and the other of 5 cm thickness on the drip lines, and three plant densities of 0 plant/square m, 12 plants/square m and 21 plants/square m were used in this experiment. Water content of soil under the 5 cm sand mulch was higher than that of the 0 cm sand mulch. Higher dry matter yield and plant height were obtained under the 5 cm sand mulch as compared to the 0 cm sand mulch. From this experiment, it is concluded that the 5 cm sand mulch on the drip lines maintained higher water content of soil in the root zone.
