Efficacy test of swine erysipelas inactivated vaccine

Swine erysipelas (SE) is zoonotic and world wide onset disease, characterized by high mortality in pig population. It occurs sporadically in domestic field causing continuous economic loss. To solve these problems, inactivated vaccine has been developed and the efficacy was confirmed through challenge trials on pigs as well as laboratory animals. In challenge test on mouse, vaccinated mice and positive control mice survived by 95~100% of total tests, but non-vaccinated mice died 100%. Also, efficacy on target species, i.e., the pigs, was tested by antibody ELISA and GIT titration. The results suggested that vaccinated pigs turned positive by 28.3 and 68.6 at 2 weeks post second vaccination but non-vaccinated pigs maintained negative by 11.9 and 5. The challenge test on those pigs was performed at 2 weeks post second vaccination. The results suggested that the vaccinated pigs did not show any significant clinical signs but the non-vaccinated pigs showed rhomboid skin lesions around inoculation site for challenge. According to those results, the efficacy of the inactivated SE vaccine was proved. therefore, hopefully it can be applied and used quarantine programs in field.
