Field survey on dietary habits of voluntary participating senior citizens to the cooking class

The voluntary participation in cooking classes consists of various ability factors for independent living in the community. The attendance at the classes is thought to be a useful activity for preventing care needs and providing enjoyment in an active daily life. In this paper the questionnaire survey was conducted to ascertain the effect of the class activity from the viewpoint of care needs prevention and healthy life time extension. The questionnaire aimed to collect data on the subject dietary habits. The target of the survey was group of elderly residents who lives in I ward of Tokyo and have continuously attended the cooking class as a voluntary activity for 13 years. The results show that they are conscious, enjoying thinking about nutrition balance, making food, and eating delicious meals. The latter-stage elderly citizens are more active in participating in social activity and the percentage of the people who tend to take main dish, side dish, and milk on a daily basis is higher than the early-stage elderly people. This shows the effect of the continuous voluntary participation in the cooking classes and leads to active lifestyle and shows a very high effect to enhance the QOL.
