Analysis of physiological and pathological features in a sub-strain of senescence-accelerated mouse, SAMP1

A substrain (SAMP1/Mj; unregistered) of the senescence-accelerated mouse, SAMP1 was characterized on the basis of physiological and pathological features including growth, life span, reproductive performance and lesions at death. Average life span of SAMP1/Mj was significantly shorter than that of the control C57BL/6J mice. Growth of SAMP1/Mj shifted to a decreasing phase after 45 weeks of age, while growth of the control mice was in a plateau until 60 weeks. In the SAMP1/Mj mice, defects of reproductive performance, such as disturbance of the estrus cycle and decrease of the birth rate occurred at about 45 weeks. Lesions such as myelogenous leukemia, and inflammatory disorder of kidney and lung were observed in SAMP1/Mj mice by laparotomy at death. This study demonstrated that SAMP1/Mj mice have similar characteristics to the original SAMP1, except for the type of common lesions.
