A percentage of sows mated within six days post weaning in four three-month periods in commercial breeding herds that were performing differently

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the associations among four three-month periods and three herd groups with the percentage of sows mating within six days post weaning (PSW6) by parity. Three herd groups were built on the basis of the upper and lower 25th percentiles of pigs weaned per mated female per year. The four periods were defined as January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December, according to the sows' weaned months. The selected 112 herds included 71,451 litters farrowed in 2005. The mean PSW6 (+- SEM) was 82.9 (+-0.14) %. Sows weaned from July to September had a lower PSW6 than those from October to December for any parity (p 0.05). In parity 5 or higher, there was no difference in PSW6 among the four period groups in high-performing herds. In conclusion, it is critical to increase PSW6 from July to September to improve herd productivity.
