Within the framework of research program developed at the Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU), at the Research Institute of Agriculture (Skriveri), field trials were established and researched was conducted over a period 1999-2003. The objective of the research was to study the influence of mineral fertilizers on perennial ryegrass forage quality. Tetraploid perennial ryegrass 'Spīdola' was sown at the rate 12 kg haE-1. Experimental layout included three factor (NPK) variations with the total number 17 which were replicated four times and arranged into so-called ”star” scheme. Additional control treatment (N0P0K0) and ”maximal” fertilization dose (N120P120K160) was added. Total plot area was 17.5 square m, check plot - 13.5 square m. During the trial, five levels of fertilizer application were compared. For nitrogen - 0; 30; 60; 90 and 120 kg haE-1 N, for phosphorus - 0; 30; 60; 90 and 120 kg haE-1 P2O5, but for potassium - 0; 40; 80; 120 and 160 kg haE-1 K2O. Results of the experiment showed that grass yield quality mostly was influenced by N fertilizers - increase of protein content in grass as well as protein yield per hectare. For example, applying N60 and N120, protein content in grass dry matter increased respectively by 0.14 and 2.66%, but protein yield per hectare - by 98 and 226%, if compare with the background treatment (N0P60K80).
