A comparative assessment of the bog aquatic environment of the Ramsar site of Teiči Nature Reserve and North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia

The investigated bog lakes are situated in nature protected areas - oligotrophic sphagnum bogs (Ramsar site Teiči Nature Reserve) - 13 lakes and North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve has three lakes). The total number of bacteria and the number of saprophytic bacteria are recorded as low. The phytoplankton of dystrophic lakes is scanty, formed by species tolerant to low pH and high humic substance concentration. Desmidiales, cholorococcales, chrysophytes, diatoms, and flagellates are dominating. Blue-greens are very scanty to none. However, dyseutrophic lakes show remarkably high numbers of taxa of algae and macroinvertebrates. Nuisance raphidophyta Gonyostomum semen is common in most of dystrophic and dyseutrophic lakes. Periphyton of most of dystrophic and dyseutrophic lakes is rich in red algae Batrachospermum spp. The most abundant taxonomic group of macroinvertebrates in all the investigated lakes in the coastal zone is insecta. Correlation between the lymnological type of the lake, the number of algae and macroinvertebrate species, colour of the water, and pH value was confirmed.
