Incidence of β – casein alleles A1 and A2 in Latvian dairy cattle populations

Frequencies of β-casein gene alleles were determined in 94 animals from the Latvian Brown and Latvian Blue breeds by means of PCR-RFLP analysis. The genotyping of β-casein alleles A1 and A2 is of the practical importance since allele A1 may be associated with the liberation of β-casomorphin and other bioactive peptides with opioid nature and cause of human non-communicable diseases. The results obtained are as follows: the frequency of allele A1 in the Latvian Brown breed (n=33) is 0.697, the Latvian Blue breed (n=61) the frequency of allele A1 in the Latvian Blue breed (n=61) is 0.779. So we obtained the first material which offers the possibility to plan the gene assisted selection. The analyzed samples are too small to be able to find beta-casein allele association with productivity and reproduction traits. Therefore, ongoing research is continued.
