Productivity parameter analysis for Latvian Darkheaded and Romanov ewes

Latvian Darkheaded sheep are considered as monobreed. In recent years, though, the interest to breed Romanov sheep was raised. The aim of this study project was to compare ewe fertility and quality of lambs born and raised. Study was conducted in affiliate Cīruļi, SIA Rīgas Nācionālais zooloģiskais dārzs during 2006-2009. The mean age of ewes was 3.5 years for Latvian Darkhead sheep and 3.4 years for Romanov sheep during research. Mean period between lambings was 305 and 264 days respectively. During study, mean number of lambs from ewe was 4.58 from each Latvian Darkheaded sheep and 6.08 from Romanov sheep (p is less than 0.05). Romanov sheep demonstrated significantly higher rate of fertility (233.7%) and mean number of lambs (7.07), but body weight before mating was significantly lower (52.5 kg). Latvian Darkheaded sheep demonstrated higher body weight gain per day in period till weaning (200 g) and mean body weight in age of 100 days (25 kg). It was estimated that possible income per one Latvian Darkheaded sheep lamb was higher by 8.40 LVL, and total revenue per one ewe - higher by 6.29 LVL. Still, sheep breeders have to take into consideration that, with shorter period between lambings, Romanov sheep were exploited for shorter time and consumed less food.
