Identification of quantitative trait loci associated in yield traits of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Yield is the most important agronomic trait for rice scientists and farmers since the ultimate goal in breeding programs is to obtain high and stable yield. With the advent of DNA marker technology and accessible mapping software, Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) for traits that contribute to yield can now be detected. This study aims to identify QTLs for yield components in an F2 population from the cross PR32330-16-1B-1/Adron 125 by Single Marker Analysis. A total of 67 polymorphic SSR markers were used to genotype 192 F2 individuals. Eight traits were examined including panicle length, grains per panicle, 100-grain weight, yield per plant, moisture content, grain length, plant height and panicles per plant. Twenty-one putative QTLs above an experiment-wise significance threshold of P0.01 were identified for all traits. The allele responsible for increased yield were detected from both parents. Forty-two percent of the QTLs identified in this study were found in the same region detected in other literatures, whereas 58% suggests of being novel QTLs derived from our local varieties. The QTLs with most significant effects were near the markers RM524, RM60, RM493, RM5389 and RM507. The SSRs linked to these putative QTLs are potential markers for use in Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS).
