The effects of 4 and 7 year-old pure pine plantation on understory vegetation composition in two reforestation sites in Guizhou Province, China were analyzed. The plant population, number of species, species richness and biodiversity indices under the pure pine plantations were significantly lower than the natural forest in the two sites studied. Soil chemical properties such as total N, available N, total P2O5, available P2O5, total K2O, available K2O and pH decreased significantly under the pine plantations compared with the natural forest. Organic matter content increased significantly under the pine plantations compared with the natural forest. Recommendations are offered to counteract the effects of pure pine plantation on these study sites.
