Diversity for morphological and maturity traits in maize populations from Upper Dir

The magnitude of genetic variability for morphological and maturity traits was studied among 41 maize populations (Pop) collected during the year 2003/2004 from the high altitudes of upper Dir of North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The populations were grown along with seven commercial cultivars during spring 2005 at the Agricultural Research Farm of NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar and were evaluated for plant height ear height, number of tassel branches, days to 50% anthesis and days to 50% silking. Significant amount of variability was observed among these populations for all the traits. Pop-10 attained maximum plant height (175 cm) while Pop-46 attained minimum plant height (94 cm), the ear height ranged from (78 cm) in Pop-5 to (29 cm) in pop-29. Similarly, Pop-28 and Pop-47 produced maximum number of tassel branches (18) while minimum number of tassel branches (9) was recorded for Pop-6. Regarding maturity traits, Pop-46 and Pop-48 took maximum days (75) for pollen shedding while Pop-6 and Pop-29 took minimum days (60), Pop-34, Pop-46 and Pop-48 were late and took maximum days to 50% silking while Pop-6 was early for this parameter. Pop-11, Pop-14, Pop-39 and Pop-44 were highly synchronized with anthesis and silking occurring on the same day. Cluster analysis of the data revealed a wide range of variability among these populations under the climate of Peshawar. Diversity observed among the tested populations could be utilized in breeding programs for further manipulation and improvement of maize populations.
