Soil erosion is a natural landscape process of critical concern to many land management agencies as erosion rates on agricultural lands in mountainous regions of Serbia considerably exceed the maximum alowable rates due to land use activities. Taking into consideration that sediment yield is observed only at small number of large watercourses, often by applying inadequate methodology, the soil erosion and sediment transport models provide an alternative method of simulating and studying the consequences of land-use activities on the nature. Beside that, erosion and sediment transport models provide all necessary informations for organizing the best management practices on a watershed scale to minimize or mitigate the detrimental effects of land uses. The review of important soil erosion and sediment transport models on a watershed scale is presented in this paper. It is pointed to their advantages and shortcomings. In that way, the choice of corresponding soil erosion and sediment transport model is alleviated.
