Nickel is the last element that has been added to the list of essential elements for plant metabolism. Of all the essential elements, plants require the lowest amount of nickel. Nevertheless, it is regularly present in plant tissues in concentrations not lower than 0.2 mg Ni/kg dry weight. Nickel is very important for the production of legumes and the other species that are supplied with nitrogen in the form of urea. Nickel can stimulate seed germination, growth, and increase yield, as was demonstrated for example in potato, tomato, zucchini, and spinach. Nickel can be introduced in the soil by irrigation with sewage sludge and its concentration may overcome the optimal range. This may cause iron and copper deficiency and impair nitrogen metabolism in plants.
