According to extent of irrigated areas, Republic of Serbia is ranked at almost last place in Europe. The facts imply that lately, in Serbia, average of irrigated areas is roughly 30.000 ha of arable land total of 5.2 million, which is barely 0.6%. Analyses show that drought in Serbia occur every third-fifth year, so in this paper are presented effects of drought that occurred during 2000 and 2003, when basic agricultural production was significantly decreased. Methods for determination of meteorological and agricultural drought are described in detail in this paper, as well as socio-economic effects of drought across the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Due to perceived results of study Droughts in Serbia, general and specific goals of the future irrigation strategy can be determined.
