The wastes are obligatory residues of industrial and almost every human activity. One of the problems resulting from uncontrolled and unorganized landfill sites is the pollution of surface and groundwater generated by landfill leachate. As the microorganisms, bacteria in particular, play an important role in biodegradation process in landfills. The microbiological quality of leachate of seven landfill sites in the Vojvodina Province was assessed. The bacterial count of aerobic organotrophs performed. The water phosphatase activity was determined in original, untreated water samples using p-nitrophenylphosphate as a substrate representing a biochemical indicator of water organic load. The sanitary risk of landfill leachate water was evaluated by using the number of total and faecal coliforms. Abundance of heterotrophic bacteria and index phosphathase activity varies in a very wide range. In the majority of samples coliform bacteria were not found.
