For purpose of drought assessment and mitigation at the territory of the Republic of Serbia, an analysis of water needs has been done. The results of this analysis show the existence of water deficit, as well as standardized precipitation index values show drought presence. Used database consists of temperature monthly average for time period of 1987-2007, at 19 weather stations. The analysis of gained values (SPI, ET, effective rainfall) for the period of 20 years prove that the most critical year was 2000, when was the peak of water deficit and SPI. Gained results also show constant water deficit during growing period (April-October) across Serbian territory. Water deficit at some spots exceeds value of 500 mm. This indicates necessary need for irrigation. Irrigation development influences directly drought effect mitigation and yield increase.
