Protection of drinking water resources and potential use of constructed wetlands for heavy metals elimination

The work presents the problematic of drinking water pollution and possible ecoremediation technique for protection and treatment. In order to protect drinking water sources from dispersed pollution preventive measures like vegetation strips can be taken. The root zone of planted trees and shrubs prevents the pollutants to enter the water body. For the treatment of polluted drinking water constructed wetlands (CW) are pointed out. The use of CW for drinking water treatment is relatively new and experiments on pilot and model plants have been carried out. Hereby we represent the preliminary results of heavy metal elimination from drinking water by model vertical and horizontal flow CW. The results show efficient removal of chromium, iron, copper, zinc, cadmium, antimony and lead.
