Evaluation of quality of feeding of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) by microscopy of the rumen contents or feces

Several plants used as roe deer feeding may be detected by microscopy and botanical analysis of the rumen contents or feces. Based on the ratio of certain plant species, chemical composition of those plants, and approproate correlation coefficients the chemical composition of the diet can be evaluated. When we plan to di the microscopy, it is essential to collect maximal amount of rumen contents immediately after rge animal is shot - in rder to obtain representaive sample, which should be frozen at 1 16 deg C, so that microbiological processes and evaporation should be stopped. Before the microscopy the sample should be thawed and filtered through sieves with pore sizes of 2 mm and 0.6 mm. The material remaining on the 2 mm sieve is used for botanical evaluation, while the material on the 0.6 mm sieve cannot be botanically determined. The evaluation of the feeding quality based on feces microscopy is done on samples collected in the hunting grounds in places where roe deer spend most of the time. In order to di the botanical analysis only the fresh feces should be used, which is analysed as soon as possible, or may be frozen until the analysis. We used chemical analysis of the rumen contents in order to evaluate the quality of feed supply in row deer. Results are significantly different from values obtained in the described methods.
