Evaluation of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) genotypes for oil and protein content

Rapeseed (Brasicca napus) is grown for the production of seed with high oil and protein content. The increased demand in raw materials for biodiesel production resulted in increased production of rapeseed in Serbia. The oil and protein content is determined by the genetic potential of the cultivar and its expression in given environmental conditions. The objective of this work was to determine oil and protein content for 16 genotypes of winter rapeseed. They were grown in two localities, in Novi Sad and Sombor (Serbia). Oil content was determined by Soxlett method and protein content was determined using micro-method by Kjeldahl. The analysis revealed significant influence of localities and genotypes on both oil and protein content. Genotypes with high oil and protein content will be included in the existing breeding program.
