This paper presents ongoing-research results with the final goal of developing two-dimensional (horizontal-plan) mathematical model able to produce long-term stimulations of flow and sediment interaction in natural watercourses. The focus of the research at this phase is the development of a robust and reliable two-dimensional flow-simulation engine. The flow model is based on depth-averaged equations fully adapted to general curvilinear coordinates. The equations are solved by using a fractional-step approach, including advection, diffusion, and propagation steps. Each is solved by using a numerical method that is in agreement with the mathematical character of the equations governing the particular-step. The paper presents the flow-model application to a particular study case, including the comparison of computed results with detailed field observations.
