Two experiments were conducted in the commercial sugarcane fields of Kenana Sugar Company to study the effect of drying-off and burning of cane as well as fallow practice on the population density of the white grub Schizonycha sp. Density of the white grub was measured in terms of number of insects per standard pit (lOOx80x30 cm). Pits were made periodically in predetermined fixed locations across each field. Drying-off and burning of cane did not affect the population density of the larvae of the white grub. Despite the significant reduction in soil moisture, the larvae endured the drought conditions caused by the fallow practice for 11 weeks. Drought conditions induced an earlier metamorphosis in the larval population to pupae and adults. The density decreased 13 weeks after the drying-off from that initially recorded and continued to decline gradually. Larvae were found at constant depths during the fallow period, whereas adults tended to move upwards
