Assessing relative efficiency of two breeding methods for the improvement of yield and quality of the local sudanese onion variety (allium cepa l.) abu ferewa

Two breeding methods, phenotypic recurrent mass selection and inbreeding followed by bulking were adopted in purifying the popular land variety "Abu Ferewa" selecting for high yield, high dry matter content in addition to uniformity of colour, shape and size and against doubling and premature bolting with good storability at ambient condition. The breeding program was started at Shambat Research Station, Khartoum North (Lat. 15° 40' Ion. 32° 32' Elev. 375 m above sea level) during 2004/05 through 2006/07 seasons. Comparing the first progeny of the two breeding methods to the original lot indicated that recurrent mass selection method was efficient in increasing marketable yield by up to 86%. The two breeding methods could lead to improved quality characteristics particularly bolting. Mass selection was more efficient in selecting against bolting. The doubling and maturity characters were unchanged by either of the two breeding methods. Further evaluation using the breeder's seed will give more elaborate conclusive results
