Effects of dual gold 96% EC (S-metolachlor) alone or in mixture with atrazine on preemergence weed control in sorghum

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Dual Gold 96 %EC (S-metolachlor) alone or in mixture with atrazine, with or without safener (Concep III 960 ES at 400 ul and 7.5 ml water/kg seed), for preemergence weed control in sorghum. Four experiments were undertaken for 4 seasons (2002/03 - 2005/06) at Gezira Research Farm on first to third week of July in all seasons. Treatments were arranged in a RCB design with four replicates in each season. Herbicides were applied at a volume rate of 105-114 L/fed throughout the seasons. Dual Gold alone at all rates, in safened or unsafened seeds, irrespective of supplementary weeding gave satisfactory to excellent control (65 -100 %) of grasses and poor to satisfactory control (0 - 66 %) of broad-leaved weeds throughout the seasons. Dual Gold at all rates in mixture with atrazine, irrespective of supplementary weeding resulted in moderate to excellent control (50 - 97 %) of grasses throughout the season and good to excellent (73 - 98 %) and moderate to excellent (50 -100 %) control of broad-leaved weeds early and late in the season, respectively, during the four seasons. All herbicides treatments reduced inconsistently weed biomass by 6 - 83 % in comparison with the unweeded control throughout the seasons. Dual Gold at all rates, alone or in mixture with atrazine, with unsafened seeds, had significant effects on sorghum plant population in the first- season, and when it was applied with safened seeds had no phytotoxic effects on plant population in the second, third and fourth-season. Dual Gold, at all rates, alone or in mixture with atrazine and safened seeds out yielded the unweeded control by 20 - 38 % throughout the seasons, and attained yield comparable to that of the weeded control
