Effects of phomac 480 SL (glyphosate) on control of fallow weeds

One experiment was conducted at Gezira Research Station Farm for three consecutive seasons (2004/05, 2005/06 and 2006/07) and two experiments at Gedarif area during season 2004/05 to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of Phomac 480 SL (glyphosate) for the control of fallow weeds. The efficacy of Phomac 480 SL (glyphosate) was dependent on rate. At 0.18 kg a.e./fed, the control of grasses and broad-leaved weeds ranged between 80 -100 and 57 - 60%, respectively at Gezira site, whereas at Gedarif location poor control by the rate of 0.18 - 0.36 kg a.e./fed of both grasses and broad-leaved weeds was achieved. Increasing the herbicide rate to 0.36 or more effected 82 - 100% and 75 - 88% control of grasses and broad-leaved weeds, respectively at Gezira location whereas at Gedarif satisfactory to excellent control was obtained. Phomac applied at 0.54 kg a.e./fed to weeds in a large area of about 10 fed effected 100 % control of weeds at Gedarif. Herbicidal activity also varied with the weeds species. Ocimum basilicum and Brachiaria eruciformis were excellently controlled (88 _ 100 %) by a dose of 0.18 kg a.e./fed, whereas Rhynchosia minima, Corchorus fascicularis and Ipomoea cordofana required 0.72 to 0.90kg a.e./fed for excellent (80 %) control. At Gedarif Vernonia amygdalina and Acalypha indica were poorly controlled by the rate of 0.18 - 0.36 kg a.e./ fed and excellently controlled by the rate of 0.72 -1.08 kg a.e./fed
