Rhyzopertha dominica F. is a dangerous and economically important insect on stored grain, products from its manufacturing, different products and row materials. The species is comparatively new in the silo-storage bases in Bulgaria. The aim of the present investigation was to establish the influence of different foods on the development, life span, sex ratio and reproductive potential of R. dominica. The experiments were conducted from 2007 till 2010 at Plant Protection Institute. From the provided observations of storages and silo-bases R. dominica was found on wheat, barley, maize, rye, oats, triticale, sorghum, оризова арпа, husked rice, buck-wheat, husked millet and rarely on their products – semolina, vermicelli, couscous, macaroni and others. The development of the insect was shortest when the larvae were bred on oats – at 26o and 32oC it lasted 41,1 and 26,7 days, respectively. The longest developmental period was on sorghum – at the mentioned temperatures it was 60,1 and 42,7 days, respectively. The highest pupal weight and the longest life span of the adults were also on oats; the lowest weight and the shortest life span were established on sorghum. The highest reproductive potential was on barley 601,5 eggs and the lowest on sorghum 102,0 eggs. The best development of the insect was on whole grain + 10% ground grain – 28,9 days and the number of layed eggs was 480,3. The slowest development was on 100% fine ground grain – 65,9 days. It was found that the stoutness of the grain influenced weakly on the biological characters of R. dominica.
