Types and distribution of mucous cells in the digestive tract (oesophagus, stomach, pyloric caecum, intestine) of Parali- chthys olivaceus were observed by the method of alcian blue and periodic acid Schiff's reaction (AB-PAS) and alcine blue staining at different pH (1.0, 2.5, 3.1 ). According to AB-PAS, mucous cells were divided into four typos. Type I mucous cells were purely red, AB negative, PAS positive, containing neutral mucopolysaccharide. Type Ⅱ mucous ceils were purely blue, AB positive, PAS negative, containing acidic mucopolysaccharide. Type Ⅲ mucous cells were purple-red, both AB and PAS positive, mainly contai- ning PAS positive neutral mucopolysaccharide and a litde of AB positive acidic mucopolysaccharide. Type Ⅳ mucous cells were blue-purple, both AB and PAS positive, mainly containing acidic mucopolysaccharide and a little of AB positive neutral mucopoly- saccharide. According to alcine blue staining at different pH, the mucous cells showed blue of the acidic mucopolysaccharide at pH 2.5 and pH 3.1, and showed weakly or powerful blue of vitriolic acidic mucopolysaccharide at pH 1.0. Based on the observation, there were abundant mucous cells in the oesophagus, stomach, pyloric caecum and intestine. Most of the mucous cells in the oe- sophagus, middle intestine and posterior intestine belonged to type Ⅲ and type IV cells, while most of the mucous cells in the pyloric caecum and anterior intestine belonged to type I cells. And there were only type I cells in the stomach. Through the classification and the comparison of mucous cells, it could be concluded that there were close relationships between the distribution and types of the mucous ceils and the functions at different locations.
