Superovulatory treatment was performed in 70 donors of various cattle breeds (Holstein, Montbeliard, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Charolais, Piedmontese, Czech Fleckvieh, Simmental) in order to evaluate the relationship between the numbers of corpora lutea (CL) and recovered embryos. The size of ovaries and CL numbers were evaluated using palpation per rectum. The recovered embryos and ova were classified as unfertilized, degenerated or suitable for embryo transfer. The total number of recovered embryos was lower than the palpable number of CL in 44 cases, higher in 28 cases and equal in 3 cases. Embryo quality did not differ between groups. Donors were grouped according to the CL counts as follows: 1) 1-5 CL, 2) 6-10 CL, 3) 10-20 CL. There was a low variability in the size of ovaries (64 out of 72 ovaries measured 4 cm).
